LAPTOP THIEF BUSTED IN RURAL COMMUNITY

The Computer Wasn’t the One That the Buyer Wanted, But It Was the One That The CyberAngel Was Tracking

Harrogate, TN July 5, 2007 - A computer stolen from an insurance agent may be responsible for ending a string of stolen computers at the eastern end of the Kentucky/Tennessee border.  The agent’s company installs The CyberAngel® from CyberAngel Security Solutions, Inc. on all their machines to help protect data and facilitate the recovery of stolen machines.  He had loaned the laptop to one of his fellow agents and the computer was stolen from her car in Harrogate, TN.  Shortly after the theft, the computer began covertly sending location information to the CyberAngel Security Monitoring Center from Middlesboro, KY.  Detective Honeycutt of the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department was on the case immediately and drove to Middlesboro to recover the machine. 

Despite attempts to hide the true location by stealing internet connections from wireless routers, Det. Honeycutt and his counterpart in Middlesboro knew exactly where to go.  “This is truly amazing technology.  Without The CyberAngel® recovery team, we would have never even known where to look for this computer” commented Det. Honeycutt.  “I took the Sheriff out to the scene with me; he was incredibly impressed with how this works.”  The person using the computer (with a retail value over $3,000) had paid $100 for the machine and was upset because it wasn’t the brand that he requested from the suspected thief.  The person suspected of the crime was posing as a computer repair technician that had several extra computers that he was selling cheap because they were no longer useful to him.
